Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement)

Arthroplasty, also called joint replacement, is the surgery to replace a damaged joint with an artificial joint (made of metal, ceramic or plastic). These procedures are required for painful deformed and arthritic joints where other modalities have failed. Besides these, alignment procedures called as osteotomies can also be used in certain conditions.

What is arthroplasty?

Arthroplasty, also known as joint replacement is a surgical procedure where a surgeon removes part of a damaged or arthritic joint and replaces it with a plastic, metal, or ceramic device, known as prosthesis. The prosthesis is made to replicate a healthy, normal joint movement.

Knee and hip replacements are the most common types of arthroplasty performed, but arthroplasty can be performed on other joints too, including the:

  • Elbow
  • Wrist
  • Ankle
  • Shoulder

Most people need a total joint replacement but a small number of people are good candidates for a partial joint replacement (The procedure that only replaces the part of the joint that’s damaged).

Who needs arthroplasty (joint replacement)?

Joint replacement is advised if the person is having:

  • Joint pain that hasn’t gotten better with nonsurgical treatments such as physical therapy, medications, bracing, injections, walking assistive devices and rest.
  • Joint stiffness and limited mobility that make it difficult or impossible to do everyday activities
  • Swelling that doesn’t improve with medications or lifestyle changes.

Most people need a total joint replacement but a small number of people are good candidates for a partial joint replacement (The procedure that only replaces the part of the joint that’s damaged).

What are the advantages of arthroplasty (joint replacement)?

Joint replacement procedures helps to relieve pain and stiffness and also corrects joint alignment. After a joint replacement, many people can take part in activities they once enjoyed. These surgeries greatly improve quality of life and overall health by allowing people to have an active lifestyle.
